The Dead Sea’s beauty is hard to describe if you haven’t seen it with your own eyes. People from all over the world are drawn to it, and for a good reason. The Dead Sea borders Israel, Jordan, and Palestine and is one of the saltiest bodies of water on earth. It also holds the title of being the lowest elevation on earth. Its high salt concentration makes it impossible for any living organism besides bacteria and fungi to survive; it’s 10 times as salty as the ocean. Sadly, it is slowly receding and drying out due to the enormous heat it’s exposed to…

Creatures from the Cretaceous period may have died off long ago, but scientists have made an incredible discovery that instantly transports us nearly 100 million years in the past: a baby bird preserved in prehistoric amber. Back in December, the same group of researchers revealed photos of a fossilized dinosaur tail with feathers, which was also an exciting find, but the latest specimen they’ve unearthed is really special because it’s nearly a complete body…

NASA Just Discovered A Bizarre ‘Bubble’ Around Earth, And Humans Accidentally Created It

Mike Wehner,BGR News

Most of the time, NASA spends its days searching for and studying things in space that resulted from natural phenomena — like creepy valleys on Mars and vast oceans on Europa — but its newest discovery is quite different. In a new paper published in Space Science Reviews, researchers reveal the existence of a man-made “bubble” created by a specific type of radio communication technology. However, unlike most of the things humans have accidentally created on Earth, this peculiar shield could actually prove to be beneficial, as long as we know how to control it…

We Could Visit Another Star System In Just 69 Years

MNN – Mother Nature Network

When news broke last year that an Earth-like planet was found orbiting the habitable zone of our nearest star neighbor, Proxima Centauri, scientists began to dream that we might visit it within our lifetimes. After all, Proxima Centauri is only 4.24 light-years away, and according to some experimental methods that might make it reachable in just over 20 years, using probes. The only problem? To reach Proxima Centauri so quickly, those probes wouldn’t be able to slow down. So it would have to be a very brief fly-by mission, with barely more than a few seconds to study the star system up-close. For those who want to stick around for a while in an alien star system, it would take a different sort …

A photo can be even more impressive when taken from the right angle. And a perfect example of this is a new NASA image of Earth taken from 870 million miles away and pictured between the rings of Saturn. A NASA spacecraft captured the astonishing image of our planet, which appears as a tiny white dot much like the stars we see in the night sky. It’s amazing to think we all live on this little speck…

This supernova was ready for its close-up times four! Researchers have spotted an extremely rare phenomenon in the sky: A galaxy was positioned perfectly to give Earth a peek at a distant supernova, magnified 50 times. The alignment also split the supernova’s light into four little images, and because of the particular type of supernova, researchers can use the differences among those four images to learn more about the expansion of the universe.  The blooming apparition of the supernova caught Ariel Goobar’s eye while the scientist was involved in a sky survey with the Palomar Observatory in California, he told Space.com in an email; the survey had been running for a few years looking for …
